HTML 5 is better than HTML4.01. Cleaner and simplified code,more tags have been added since 4.01 making html 4.01 outdated.

HTML5 has a lot advantages in comparison to HTML4. It has an integrated audio and video player, so nowadays Adobe Flash is completely useless. In Addition to this you are able to create games with HTML5. It also has some code differences (e.g. tags) and it is (of course) newer than the previous version. All in all you should go with HTML5. But both versions have actually the same structure and the basics are identical.
