Android Studio is built on top of the IntelliJ Platform - an open source project built by the talented people at JetBrains.com. I've been using their commercial IDEs for many years now and can't say enough good things about the quality of their dev tools. In fact, I highly recommend their WebStorm for frontend developers and PHPStorm for anyone needing more capabilities with PHP development support along with other server side functionality. For those with a commercial budget, the full IntelliJ IDEA Subscription to their entire IDE Suite is worth it 100 times over. ** NOTE: I am NOT, in any way, affiliated with this company. I'm just a strong believer in their tools and the value it has been, for me, in creating an amazing development experience on many different platforms. **
