Why "Hello world" ?

i have always wondered why is hello world the first example for any programming language and where did it came from?

Brian Kernighan actually wrote the first "hello, world" program as part of the documentation for the BCPL programming language developed by Martin Richards. BCPL was used while C was being developed at Bell Labs a few years before the publication of Kernighan and Ritchie's C book in 1972.

i think it was the first text that has been transmitted over the arpanet the net before the internet

no idea where it came from, but the most basic output is printing text to a screen, therefore it ends up being the first thing taught to newcomers
