CSS Variable browser compatibility:

Chrome ~ 49.0 (2016)
Edge ~ Support
Firefox (Gecko) ~ 42 (2015)
Internet Explorer ~ Not support

Safari Mobile ~ 9.1
Chrome for Android ~ 49.0

Other option, you could consider use SASS or LESS preprocessor.
