Okay, found it. In the lower left corner of Google keyboard, hit ?1(smile emoji) until you see ABC. Above that if you see =\< then hit that and backslash is on the right. Otherwise it shows ?123 because you're already at the right place. Note, for Android Lollipop.

Hackers Keyboard. Full / no shortcuts taken; all the keys you use on a desktop + automatic terminal workarounds for console.

I use SwiftKey but it might be similar, I have to go to nums '123' then '{$~' for special characters. There is usually a special characters button after switching to numbers/symbols

As i know, there are emulated keyboards for tap screen in Android usualy . So if you do not see a backslah in your present keyboard, you can switch into another in setup or Android. Or install some other from Google shop.

it's funny, sometimes it appears in the Symbols keyboard under 1/2, sometimes not!

On my LG phone with Android 5.0 I press and hold the period key to get a pop-up menu with the slash, backslash and some other symbols on it.
