Think about it like this:
- What is cyber security?
- What are you securing or protecting?
- What are you protecting it against?
You learn how to protect against someone by knowing the same things that they know. If you don't know or understand how it works, how would you protect against it or protect what you're protecting? You can't and don't. If you don't know how networks work or how its security does or doesn't work, how do you deal with handling networks? If you don't know how an operating system works, how do you help protect it? You're only as good as the things you're aware of, so if you're unaware of the whole world that exists behind the things you use, then you won't be aware of how to address the issues that exist on that layer.
Since security is something that's needed on all levels of our IT, from our systems to our databases to our code to our networks to etc..., you'll want to be as educated on all of it as you can be. Learn as much as you can.

^Check out that site when you got time, they offer some free courses on various things. That'll help you learn some of the fun stuff you're looking for, but you'll also want to put time into understanding the grand picture of IT.

I do agree there are various cyber security threats that are effecting the network security with home and office as well . Threats like Malware is an Malicious software, including ransomware, spyware, viruses, and many more. Through protecting your network , you should learn about the different types of threats such as Phishing, Man-in-the-middle attack, Denial-of-service attack and multiple ways to protect the network.
