How can I verify user data login?

I have a HTML form that I want to verify the user login username and password against MySql database in php...
How do I even begin?

use the select command and take the specifications to it from your page. If a row is selected, you'll have a successful login, else, an unsuccessful login attempt.

for example,
select * from some_table where username=<html_parameter_here> and password=<html_parameter_here>

if a row is selected, it means the login was authorized.
