Why do people have to go to school

Because most people are lazy and won't start working or learning if no one tells them they have to.
Also, even though school can be time consuming and annoying, it gives a structure to your life. You go there every morning, return home in afternoon and do homework in the evening. People need repetitive things in their lifes so they can feel more satisfied and generally happier.
Last but not least - school should be giving people general knowledge. No matter who you are you need some basic knowledge on human body's functions, first aid, global politics and culture.
Honestly, I know that public education in many countries is really bad but still - idea of school is great at the core. And I say all that even though I hated all shools I went to. Let's stop hating on public education and think about how we could make it better. :-)

If you did not know context and reading, will you be able to learn it online?
Did everyone in your classroom WANT to learn?
Not everyone knows what to specialize.
School makes you need to learn and not lazy

Because most of them do not know what they want in life, thus school offers a direction. It's for the safety of most people like the saying: "Stay in school. Don't do drugs!".
