What are the basics that I need to know before I start to learn ANY Programming Language?

I'm learning Java, I'm a Mechanical Engineer with absolutely no basics of coding. Please guide me

It's all about your goals.... nevertheless, i would recommend you to learn Html , CSS and JavaScript before...and then start with PHP or Python ...but it's not a step-by-step scheme , it's just about your goals !!!

so HTML is like the daddy and Java, javascript, c++ and C# are all children. each kid has different quirks but they all share the same basic structure or dna of daddy HTML. Thats how I see it anyways.
