Older and more esoteric languages that are often not taught any more in colleges today (or at least not as glamorous as new languages) are usually the most in-demand, and can have a big paycheck simply because there are so few people that are into those languages, let alone capable of using them. For example COBOL which is used in many financial institutions and their infrastructure *to this day* even though it was invented around 1959 (59 years ago now) and is archaic at this point. But, to upgrade from COBOL-based systems to a more modern style can cost triple-digit millions for companies, and billions for big-time financial companies like banks.

@Tom... I agree with most of what you said, except the part about these jobs being "the most in-demand" part.
Perhaps it's more about the limited supply of such resources in a niche market than it is about high market demand in the industry.

True; good point. With so few of them and yet a desperate need for them the salaries can be greatly exaggerated from norms, but there's also only so many of them who could possibly be employed at once simply because of a lack of need for more than the limit or at least near it.
