What is the importance on languages such as Swift, Ruby, and SQL?

I am just learning to code, and have no idea what is going on with all the languages being taught. There are languages I’ve heard of before, like Java and Python, but I don’t know why there are so many other languages. Furthermore, what types of computers use these languages?
