Several factors influence, but the reality is that they are preferred because the community usually recommends it. I mean, the popularity (at least in the case of Python) of the language depends a lot on the diffusion that there is among the users, who motivate those who start to program.

On the other hand both languages offer you simplified structures and a nice syntax, which allows you to quickly get familiar with them and makes them very attractive when you make comparisons with other languages that need more elements to execute a problem.

In any case, I always recommend that people inform themselves and choose a language according to their needs and expectations.
