What's the best Windows for pentesting? /sarcasm
IIRC, Kali is Debian-based and was Ubuntu-based.
1. Grab latest Kali.
2. # dpkg --get-selections > kali.txt
3. Download your favourite distro.
4. Install (from repo or source) all the relevant packages from the kali.txt list.
5. You now haz Kustom Cali.
6. Get a hoody.
7. U r a haxxor... As long as someone blogs stuff to copy-paste into the CLI.
It's satyr, but without having a decent knowledge of the underlying Linux fundamentals, you should _not_ be dabbling. Kali does not make you cool. Kali (well the tools and setup that make it Kali) is a convenience tool for people who can use it. It's not for breaking into bitcoin exchanges and stealing millions (no names *cough*), it's for security teams that're hired to evaluate flaws in security.
If you want to do serious work, put the time in. You can go trash-diving for a free PC or spend $50 on one and install Debian + XFCE (or Fluxbox if it's really low spec). Then learn what you can before you make the change from Windows to Linux on your main ($400+) machine once you feel ready. Then you realise you still have much to learn. I've been using Desktop Linux exclusively for years -- Debian specifically because of my tech-politics -- and I'm still, in my opinion, no expert despite all the systems and networks I've setup and all I've read. There is no shame in admitting what you don't know, only in lying about what you do know.

A fool with a tool remains a fool.

But you can take any linux distro and just install the tools you need!

I used Fluxbox, Spacefm, and a bar called FBpanel or something for a long time before venturing into traditional DE world. Now I use XFCE. I try a new DE now and then but they all end up failing the functionality test.
