Another aspect that get's rarely mentioned when someone asks for security careers is "how to get a job" While self learned coders are often hired you'll most likely won't get a job if you just know about security. Devs can prove what they can do by showing their repository, but in cyber security you need a bit more. If two people with the needed skills apply for a job they will most likely choose the guy with certificates and not the self-taught one. The reason is quite simple: they need to trust you. There is just no room for potential risky employees in security fields. And I'm not only talking about the trust in terms of "where did he actually practice? Did he test his knowledge in the wild?", but also in terms of knowledge gaps that could have devastating outcomes for the company that needs you to be absolutely sure that nothing will go wrong.
