With or without CMS for the landing page
use CMS like wordpress or not for the landing page site where the customers want to add some news in the world every day or week... or create your own CMS

Customers do not wish to fiddle with HTML when they wish to update something on their pages.
Using wordpress is no doubt a good idea, but in most cases you would want to give their user "author" permissions and not administrator (since that is what they will be doing - writing posts)
You can however use php to create a simple looking site that uses PHP where they would still need to log in and then they can update posts that is stored in a database. for the customer it would look natural, no messing with code.
Just remember when you are designing a site for them yourself, that you include all those securities to prevent cross site scripting and HTML vulnerabilities. To prevent your customer from messing up the site or someone maliciously trying to.
