The First Computer Programmer Was a Woman. In 1842, Ada Lovelace, known as the “enchantress of numbers,” wrote the first computer program.

It is really not possible to know, as is much of our history. Luigi Menabrae wrote the algorithms which Ada translated, Ada had knowledge of the analytical engine and in fact Babbage wrote some programs which were never published. We have to look at the term Software, as abstracted from a particular device. Understanding what is to be done by some abstract device and thinking about how to be certain it works correctly constitutes writing a program. The main credits that have to be given to Ada is her knowledge of mathematics, her initiative and desire to work in this new frontier and her translation and insights on and during the implementation of Menebrae's programs. In the translations, either by Ada herself or a later transposition (remember, most all communications were hand written) of variables introduced a bug into the work. Contrary to modern software psychology, I will not say its a "defect". I wish I had known about this when I made the same error sometime around 1969 in a FORTRAN program for a course in Introduction to Computing for Engineers at NC State University. It is a shame that this pair (Ada and Babbage) did not have other enthusiastic followers who could carry on their work. So, if you have an analytical bent or desire, ladies (from young to senior) I hope you will take on the same enthusiasm that Ada did and bring your skills and ideas to help us continue to innovate for a better future.
