Is python required to get placement in IT companies?

generally, no. but every company and area uses different things.

this isn't sure-fire due to what I just mentioned, but I recommend java over python for job searching

Depends on company what it asks and your own desires. Do you want web app development, then go for python and flask/django. Want to build software like antiviruses, compressors, image viewers then go for c/c++/assembly. Discover what you want and type on Google what languages you need for that. More you know easier you will be employed.
