A keyboard can also be considered as a collection of buttons that stand for a specific letter. You don't even need a complex driver for it, you just need to manage a few buttons. And this at least must have been implemented within the handware with a logical circuit, for example with a lot of relays (you didn't even have a programming language when the first computers were created)
