Simple Javascript Selectors are not working here on sololearn

Question

document.getElementById("whatever") just keeps returning null! The code works fine when it's all on the same page but I dont want to do that. Do I have to link the script using something like
<script src="sololearn.js"></script>

Its really annoying!

No code examples needed here I just need to know if we have to link in the script?
