Difference between VSCode and Visual Studio 2017

Question

Hello everyone,

I am relatively new to programming altogether and I wondering what is the difference between Visual Studio 2017 and VSCode? I've googled it, but the sites I found often used coding jargon i'm not (yet) familiar with. Could anyone explain the difference to me in basic terms?

And also, I've already downloaded VS17, do I need VSC then?

I have one follow-up question though: "...unless you wish to use it for other languages."

Do you mean I should VSC instead of VS17 for some languages?
