AI is when you give intelligence to the application or an entity in the application. For instance, you can tell the entity to walk left is there is a wall to the right.
Machine learning is when the computer can take a set of data, find patterns in it, and then learn from the patterns to be able to predict similar circumstances. For instance, you can give it a set of data of many games of chess, it can learn from what led to winning or losing, and then it can play the game of chess, looking out for what it learned.
