Is it worth getting a degree on computer science?

Hello im searching for options for career studies and computer science is one that got my attention. My question is: is it worth spending 4 years on this degree? I have read in many pages that you dont need college to learn this, altho it seems like a very broad subject... Thank you

If you want a job in a large company, like google or Microsoft, it does help because they want to see someone who can puts years into something. But in the end, people care more about how much you know than your education. in my opinion, the degree is a good idea.

CS is a good start if you want a career in IT. The best graduate jobs tend to go to Engineering and Maths post graduates who also learn programming during their studies. For Software jobs in large companies like Google, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft, they want to see that you also participated in Open Source projects. For Junior Web programming, you may be able to get away with less.
