If you have a genuinely great idea, go for it though. Worst outcome? You earn nothing from the app, but learn skills that could pay very well! You could then pay someone else to build the next version of your app! đ

Three main variations:
1. Freemium model (free basic version, user pays for advanced features)
2. Pay for app up front
3. Free app, money from avertising

Most people won't make much money these days, similar to YouTube. People who had early entry (in the early days) and an ok idea, could make ok money.
It's a bit like the music industry. Some bands will make millions, some will do ok, most will make nothing or make a loss! Same with apps.
Now the market is saturated, and competition is very high. An excellent idea is not enough. You need lots of luck, and an a great user interface.
Honestly, I think setting up a business doing something else would be far easier! At least a local business doesn't have competition from all around the world!

I think it's a great idea for fun. You could invent a simple puzzle game perhaps? I don't want to be too discouraging, however the probability of big success is low.
I was asked to develop an app recently. Getting all their diverse customer base to actually use it, would be extremely difficult as it's mostly a much older age group. Most much older people, don't use apps. The middle aged person asking me is misunderstanding their customer demographic. Anyway, I'm getting side-tracked. My example was to show a wider picture.
