php combined with sql is mostly used to work with information.. for example, if you look at a website like Gumtree.. to post an advertisement you have to fill in a form describing the product and upload a picture of what you want to sell.. that information in the form is sent and stored on web server and can be managed using sql.. php gives you access to the sql commands to do whatever you like to do with the information.. php can also create files like .txt .css .html, which in my opinion makes it a very powerful programming language.. there are many other things php can do, but that's all I can think of right now..
