In regards to numbers, you can always check:

Java has held the top spot for quite some time.
However, I wouldn't base what you do on those numbers at all. What YOU are doing has nothing to do with what SOMEONE ELSE is doing or has done. Get what I mean? If your project will be better accomplished with Java, then use Java. If Python would work better, then do that. Has nothing to do with popularity, but simply your own relative skill and ability to work with a particular language when you need to.
Think of it like tools on a tool belt. What is the best tool and which one is used more? I imagine a hammer would fit that, so it must be the best! Nope. All of the tools are simply tools and they work best under certain users and work best depending upon their given task in a given moment. If I need to screw something in, can I do it with a hammer? Yes, but it's not as efficient as using a screwdriver.
So my advice is to gather up all the tools you'll require for the various tasks you find yourself in, and place the tools on your toolbelt so it's available when you need it.
