in the case of most popular languages is hard to say which ones will be more used. It would be better for you learn a language and study its frameworks.

Joshua Pneda Yes you need to know HTML, CSS, JS before you can be able to dive into backends... but with frameworks on different programming language. It makes development easier.. Like me, I learned PHP after which I started studying frameworks in PHP for quick development of applications.. so I was able to master CodeIgniter, Larvael...and etc.

You can start learning languages for backend dev even without learning html/css/js etc. but it would help as it will give you basic foundation on how to code. But getting back to the question, no, you dont have to. You may start learning languages like Java, Python, C/C++ without having to learn/master front end languages

JavaScript apparently can be used for backend for I/O intensive web pages..Nodejs is gaining popularity I would suggest u to learn Javascript and then move on to nodejs....
