I use an laptop with an i5 and 8GB RAM. So far I have not had any problems with most of the programs I use.

The most problematic can be battery consumption in some cases. Depending on the task you are doing the battery can be exhausted quickly.

For most things you should be ok. The bigger the program is, meaning the amount of code being processed, the more intensive it will be. An icore5 is enough to handle most small to medium sized programs. We use icore5 in my university for our programming classes.
