What are the criterion to become a fruitful programmer?

My aim is to become a good programmer please guide my path.

pick ur interests, have a goal in mind
programming will be just a tool to help shape ur goal,
without any goals in mind , simply learning programming will feel boring and tedious within few hours or days. It happened with me many times before
later I developed interest in games, webpages design, client server models , encryption schemes
this things kept me motivated through out my learning , still a lot to learn , but I achieved a lot with goals in mind rather than simply picking programming languages.
