Do you need a degree to be an advanced programmer?

I have a lot of friends who are going to college to learn software development and programming. I have held an interest in it for a long time, but I donā€™t have the desire to go to school for it or get a job as a programmer. Are there free/inexpensive advanced programming courses that I could take online? Or should I just practice a lot and read books about it?

That depends widely on the country you live in. In some places employers just want to know what you can offer them and care very little about any formal degree. In others they only care about degrees. Some other places are somewhere in the middle... I would know; I have travelled quite a bit. So just ask people in your country or run Google searches about requirements to be hired in your country... And if you do live in the US (that is the country on your profile), you can probably get by with no formal degree in CS if you get really good
