I'm new, and i wonder, how long did it take you to understand what java does and how you can work with it?

Welcome to SoloLearn! Everybody learns at one's own speed, so it's really hard to tell how long you will need to master Java. But if you go through the course and practice every little thing you learned you can create simple programs very quickly. Just ask if you have any questions about how Java works or about the course content. Make sure to add an example then, the better the question, the better the answers ;)

Rome wasn't build in a day, so just keep going. And maybe the comments in the lessons can help you to understand it better.
