Answers to this question are in a book I have been reading for C. "The C Programming Language" by Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie dtd 1988. There is some code in there for character counting (without using strlen), line counting, word counting, ect. You can do a Google search and download the book or find a copy at your local library. It has been a very good read for a newbie such as myself.
