As for if it's best work or not, that's debatable. I personally find it boring, but it's necessary.

That's right. I think that's why I find it boring also. When you see my "designer" skills, it becomes very apparent that I'm really just a programmer. lol However, I suppose that's an opportunity for me to progress in other areas and become better.

It is basically a combo of programmer and designer. Kind of. Mostly combined with UX(user experience). Can be challenging or boring, depending on what interface it is about.
