-webkit- is a vendor prefix mostly used by Chrome, the reason why you have to use -webkit- for certain features of CSS is because they're still under a test phase, so you can use it but it's not part of the final browser yet, it's still in an experimental phase.

it makes in example an linear-gradient available for its browser -webkit- for google -moz- for firefox -ms- i guess for internet explore -o- i guess for opera
