The language in which we can write english language like syntax which anyone can understand (Not necessarily a programmer) is called a high level language. For e.g. "C" language contains words like "if, else, for" which are also there in English language.

anyways to answer your question, the further a language is from assembly, the higher level it is (in layman terms)
