C# and Java are practically the same languages
C# is just a tweaked version of Java
If by "practical", you mean a wide range of applications, then it obviously would be java.
Java is used almost anywhere, even in Machine learning

First, it really boils down to what you want to do, both languages are similar nearly identical to each other, and have so many applications in many areas, secondly, both languages can run on multiple platforms and used in machine e.g.C#, azure machine learning integration, but if you want my personal opinion, I would say C#, it's better structured and engineered than java and the amount of support and integration you can get from is huge.

Java Is used much more widley. But we can't really answer this question without knowing what you want to do. If you want to build programs for Microsoft Windows, for example, then you should probably learn C#. Otherwise, I would recommend Java.
