You could use a virtual machine on either Windows or Linux (depending on what you have already installed).

You can also partition your HDD/SDD and run Windows on one partition and Linux on the other partition.

I will suggest that,
first try one of the linux distro on vm if u like it then dual boot it with windows. If your going to stick to the vm ur device should have better hardware so it will serve you lag free environment.
If you don't have plan for which distro to choose I will suggest you for mint os.
