HTML how to write it correctly (conventions)

Hello.
Is it a good idea to write html 5 with xml syntax ?
(like a XHTML using new elements of html5).
Is it hepful for compatibility and to make the code cleaner ?

if you first of all want to have a markup that fits conventions, test it in the validator. that's the main parameter in respect of compatibility/conventions. clean code shouldn't be an issue with the markup. https://validator.w3.org/
