do i need to have a degree to get started in it?

hello,
i am wondering if i need a degree in computer sience or something to get a job as a programmer. i am currently working in IT and i write little programs which help my colleagues at work. it makes me happy to see that my programs are used daily and make people more efficient. but would a software company take me without any "professional" skill or a degree in the stuff i do?
