<hr /> with forward slash is in XHTML syntax.
<hr> is the correct HTML5 variant. In your case, even if you misstyped it, the browser sees it as <hr> anyway.

In html5 it will still work. But if you want your document readable by XML parsers, you must use / slash and write as <hr /> with a space between hr and /.
