I think if one programming language was better than the other one in every way (easier to learn/read, faster, more memory-efficient etc.), the other language would be dead within a couple of months time because nobody in their right mind would want to learn it...

I prefer python. There are hundreds of free modules available. Programmers and time will decide which one is better. Its a process of natural selection. Ruby on Rails made Ruby popular but Python has Django. Sketchup might have helped Ruby as well. But I don't know any framework based on Ruby for scientific stuff as compreensive as python. Python has lots of things. Look up for PythonXY. If you're looking for speed, try numba. Or even c/c++ combined with python. Python is also a good high level integrator.

You can't compare them. They do have huge differences and it depends on what project you're aiming.

Python is not much faster than Ruby. Since version 1.9, Ruby has started to catch up Python in performance (Current Ruby version 2.5.1).

I heard that ruby is a very „beautiful“ language. With Python, which is gaining popularity like no other language, it might be easier to advance into AI though. I myself only can use python yet. Check out the stackoverflow survey on programming languages. It also kinda shows real world needs, if you take it with a grain of salt :)

Ruby is more powerful than Python in terms of language features, but Python has a greater community, is simpler, and is easier to learn. Both can be used as general purpose language inclusive for scripting.

Python works faster than Ruby, it has more possibilities and is more widely used and has bigger support. Tho Python is little harder to learn than Ruby, but it's just my personal opinion :)
