Very good question! Degrees provide us eligibility to work in some prestigious companies as they believe that someone has spent money and time for getting degree . But it is to be noticed that anyone can achieve anything with some positive motives even without having any formal education in particular field. In Mahabharat, Eklavya was one of many scholars.

I've worked with many people, graduated and not graduated. The best I ever worked with was not graduated. He was (and he is) a really master of code. A guru. I learned so much from him. So, there are no differences between graduated or not graduated person. Practice and experience, combined with sharing and studying, make you better. And this true for everything you do.
IMHO from my experience

Good day! It seems to me a very urgent question at the moment. I can give an example of my friend who does not have a degree, but he has achieved a lot. At first he worked in freelancing, and as he gained experience, he found a working scheme for fulfilling orders. And now he is a popular freelance developer and he has his own (company) where there are developers and they fulfill orders of different formats together. And I also want to note that he had enough offers to get a prestigious company.
Honestly, as for me, it is enough to have desires and love this business, and the rest will turn out by itself) (a bit of philosophy)

depends on your creativity, people obtain degrees to increase their knowledge and skills, but then most coders without degree tends to become self employed and make money via their level of creativity

basically in INDIA, the education system ruins the future of many students.
Our ed. system forces us to make a machine and do the thing like machine.
system belives in woking continuously.....
I am the one who got too much frusteted by the education system of our country(india).
I'm currently doing my b.tech in electrical engineering. so I guess our system thinks its more important to get degree from a college nd get a job in company, where u will work in ms office or excel....after the training.but for me..believes in learning, not in blindly follow the education system...
so, basically STUCK BETWEEN WHAT TO DO NOW...

I don't have a degree and I've done a few small projects lifetimes ago. I _used_ to freelance but as my memory problem worsened, so did the scope of my confidence. Now I do contract work installing and setting up networks (Linux only, though I've guessed my way through a Mac). Ironically my supervisor for one job had a CompTIA and I was literally ready to strangle him with ethernet cable...
*Because he knew nothing. Absolute zip. And I got the lower pay. Life.

In the 1970s I was a physics major at USC I got corrupted by computers got a job as a computer operator at USC which paid my tuition and got me spending money. using the ARPANET, which we just got access to, I wrote my class project for CS 575 using MIT-DMCG over the NET. It was a line drawing computer graphics system that emulated an Evens & Sutherland LDS-1, an incredible piece of hardware at that time. MIT used my graphic system MIGS for 10 years After the matrix multiplier in the LDS-1's hardware died and could not be repaired. The MIGS software could do sub-picturing, transformations, and 3-D projection down to a two dimensional screen on most vector drawing display terminals. Migs was coded in muddle a dialect of lisp, it got me the TA ship for the course and my job at USC-ISI. I spent 22 years at USC-ISI working on the development of the ARPANET which became the Internet in 1983. I never saw a reason to actually get a degree. it never interfered with me being a computer scientist for USC. in my spare time I have now gone back to the study physics, general relativity and differential geometry. It makes a lot more sense now than it did when I was a student.
USC – ISI developed TCP-IP which Internet runs on. at ISI people either had no degree or PhD. Back then all you had to do was know how to code and break a research problem into small peices and code them. Then put the pieces of code together and solve the problem. I have also consulted with the FBI for Internet security and NASA for a cluster satellite project.

Having a degree might help you get into the industry in the beginning, more than just learning and having no professional experience. But doing freelance work and extra project free work to gain the experience to put on your resume works too and you should be able to get a job once you can show and prove you know how to code even without a degree.
