What a coincidence, check out my comment under the very recent post. Nobel Prize winner Paul Romer argues about Jupyter (supporting Python) Notebook's open-source strength versus Mathematica:

In general, Python's versatility makes it a more accessible tool in the long run. And Jupyter with its ease of manipulation and interactivity makes the combo a very strong competitor for perhaps more specialistic, but to their own doom, proprietary and closed-end solutions.

Python is a "general" programming language. Others are designed to meet a particular goal.
Matlab, Fortran and Mathematica are mostly used by mathematicians and engineers.
