There is the difference in the results. when we use <em> and then the close tag </em> we get everything in italics between these tags and after these tags. when we use <i> and then the close tag </i> we get everything in italics only between these tags. i observed it when i used notepad in my laptop. u should also try once.

If you need to emphasize parts of your text, use the <em/> tag. From a SEO (Search Engine Optimization) point of view, this is the way to go, since Google and Co. will grant more points on good semantics.
