software update checker

my question is, how update managers look up for new versions, is there any place that software providers website is stored so they go thru that or they have a update module that they use? im still learning !

Alright so this is something I know is out there and Git is built for stuff like that but I havent taken the time to sit down and understand it, so I am going to tell you what I am currently using for my work project for updates. Its not perfect but it works for my purposes. I built an electron app at work, the app is used to track inbound calls and store the data to be later reviewed in a mysql database. The app had a "global_data.json" file that has a version key. inside the database there is a table for client updates. its a transaction based table where I have written a program to insert into this table a new version number when i am ready to push an update.every time the client system clears, reboots, or opens. it hits this table, checks the most recent entry and if the version in the table doesnt match the version in the json file it will run a child-process thats just a small batch script to re-download and overwrite the changed files. it has been working great for me but in a large scale production en

@Brandom , thanks for replying i know git and version controlling a bit. what i get from your answer is that u have a software and you made an update module for that software. but what if i want to find all software installed on a operating system and find if they have updates or not. where can i get version table for [most popular] softwares out there?
