Personally, unless it is PHP, I do most of my code in Notepad++. For PHP, I've always been a fan of phpDesigner by MPSoftware.

The IDEs from JetBrains are great. jetbrains.com Although some of their products have to be bought, they have a 100% discount for students. You just need a student ID of some kind (e.g. ISIC).
