Again some programming history:
After ww2 European countries were devastated. (financially, infrastructure, heavy toll on human lives)
However U.S.A. had suffered much less in comparison and could afford to finance the development of computers/computer science.
Hence most progress on computers was made by U.S.A. companies/academics.
But the basis of computers was born in U.K.

Color is mainly used in programming and colour in British English writing

Color is used in US English and colour is used in British English. As programming originated and mostly conducted in USA color is used when programming.
