Is it too late to change career?
I'm 38 and have been a Linux system administrator for a long time. But I'm getting bored with my job and looking to change. I'd love to work with python and flask and do more coding. I'm just worried that changing career at this age will mean I need to take a wage cut. Does it make any sense to be aiming for this? How would an employer look at me in terms of potential considering my age? Can I get up to speed and get back to a decent wage quickly?

I haven't been able to even start my career yet, but I imagine that if you can produce results, you'll catch up.

It is never too late. In my life I have been a draftsman, store manager, sailor, soldier, flower picker, liquor store retailer and now a teacher. When you move careers you are not starting from scratch, you bring all the experience from your previous life and career. Employers also like people with get up and go. Wanting to broaden your horizons shows this. I am 46, three years ago I got introduced to 3D printers now I build them as a hobby and am now learning coding so I can write my own instruction set for a five axis 3D printer. Also I am the goto person at my school for anything electrical or computer based. Not to bad for a person that studied History and Economics at University. Never stop learning, even if you dont end up changing careers you are always adding new weapons to your arsenal.

i think you are focusing a bit too much on your age and not enough on your skills. you don't want an employer who does that, and as a job seeker, you have the responsibility as well as the right to choose who you work for.
i say that your age could be an asset, in terms of experience and capability, if you let it.

In life people regret not taking actions towards fulfilment of dreams more than they regret anything else. If it is your dream to code in Python and Flask then I suggest you take actions towards that direction.

I am also thinking about this. I think that you should think more about what you want to acomplish in life and not about salary. If you will like it and develop fast the wage level sooner or later will be ok. The crucial thing is what you want to do and if you have enough courage to do it.

Never too late to do what you are happy with. It would be challenging and worth it.

It is never too late but at 40 years old, the brain is not able to assimilate new things very much. It is downhill from there until death when it comes to learning new things. So learn as much as you can before hitting 40.
