Being a freelance is all about showing your completed work and personal successes. If you have your portfolio public and you're on a site where people can hire you based on them, you're a freelance. You just need a basis to show your skill on.

You should definitely have a LinkedIn, and also a Github with your projects, and pretty much any site along the lines of "freelance developer" will work.
