If your computer is enough for web browsing, it should be enough for data science. Some projects may need too much resources but sometimes best computers aren't enough so companies use 100s of computers. For learning at home more resources may be beneficial but not necessary. 5yo laptop will be fine. More ram, ssd instead of HDD and fast NVIDIA GPU(mostly for image recognition and DNN) may be beneficial.

I make AI, and vocabulary for russian language eat 600-700 mb ram, and every word(in fact every sound) recognizes and use 100% core(amd 2 core of 2 ggz) the word is recognized in 2-3 seconds. I am an example with data. Do you use machine learning? or use algorithm logic?

If your videocard is Nvidia then you use Nvidia Cuda tehnology(docker). But you need linux. Windows is not support docker. https://github.com/NVIDIA/nvidia-docker With a docker your video card works like a main processor.
