With time, we get to work with languages with much easier syntax and less hectic and slow speed. That's what differentiate languages.
First generation or binary languages were fastest and they only consisted of 0 and 1. You can consider how much hard it was to type in them.
Second generation were assembly languages. Slower than binary but easier in syntax.
Then, came 3rd generation languages like basic, c e.t.c. Slower then assembly languages but easier in syntax.
Then, came 4th generation languages like java, python e.t.c. with least speed and much easier syntax...
